Kiwicon 7 Girl Geek Dinner: The Venue

Wow! We’ve already sold 38 tickets in less than a week! Time for a sneak peek at the venue for the evening:

This event is being run in the Exhange Atrium, a shared space that joins Allen and Blair Streets, right in the heart of Wellington’s Courtenay quarter. It’s a very flexible space which can easily accommodate us for dinner, while still retaining cozyness and character. We have exclusive access to the Atrium for the entire evening thanks to the adjoining Monsoon Poon restaurant, who are catering us for the evening.

The Atrium is licensed so there will be a limited selection of alcoholic and and non alcoholic beverages available at a cash bar inside the venue (no eftpos facilities in the atrium sorry, so please bring cash with you), with the full bar just next door for anything on their drinks list. There’s also a coffee machine at the full bar.

Guests who are under the legal drinking age are still very welcome to attend, you just can’t drink alcohol.

We do encourage guests to stay after the event’s main proceedings are over and take full advantage of having the space to yourselves for the night.

Access is via the Allen Street entrance to the Atrium, to the right of Household Linens (17A Allen St). There’s a few steps up into the Atrium through this entrance, or there’s ramp access via an alternate entrance also on Allen Street. These will be locked externally for the night before the event begins for venue security.

Bathrooms are available through in the main restaurant, which are wheelchair accessible.

It’s close to Wellington’s bus routes and taxi stands. There is on street parking on nearby streets, which is metered until 8pm on Friday nights.

We’ve aimed to pick a flexible venue suitable for dining and presentations, that’s situated close to the Friday Kiwicon events. How did we do?

Kiwicon 7 Wellington Girl Geek Dinner (Nov)

Drumroll please… We’re pleased to announce the second annual Kiwicon Girl Geek Dinner on the 8th of November!

Set on the Friday night before the conference at Monsoon Poon, we’re hoping this will give everyone a chance to meet up before the ‘con kicks off the next day.

The event is not restricted to just Kiwicon attendees, so if you’ve missed out on a Kiwicon ticket, or are just curious, we’d love you to come along and get to know each other over dinner.

Doors will be open from 6pm. We’ll be posting a menu soon.

Tickets are priced at $20, with a limited number of student tickets available at $5 each. Tickets are available for purchase thanks to the awesome team at Lil Regie, but you’ll have to be in quick!

We’d like to thank Kiwicon for their generous funding and support to make this event happen again, after a sell-out event last year we’re hoping this year’s will be even bigger and better!

As always tickets are for woman, however Men are also welcome as a guest of a woman attending.

Looking forward to seeing you all!

Speakers for our upcoming event

So we’re really excited about announcing the awesome ladies who will be speaking at our Girl Geek Dinners at Nethui on July 8th.

Our first speaker is Merrin Macleod who will talk on her recent work organising Wellington’s Rails Girls, a free weekend event open to all enthusiastic girls and women.

Merrin makes internet at Rabid, is technically a full-time design student, and is full of crazy ideas about making things better for people. She organised Wellington’s first Rails Girls workshop at the beginning of June and will explain to you why Rails Girls is great, why it’s kind of problematic, and what other steps need to take place towards achieving her ulterior motive of a diverse, welcoming and successful technology industry.

Our second speaker is Natasha Lampard. Natasha is the mother of an event called Webstock, a start up called Lil Regie, a dog called Bird and three tiny humans called Belle, Harry and Xanthe.

You can get your ticket right now from here or read details about the event here.

Wellington Girl Geek dinners at Nethui

We have teamed up with the wonderful people at Nethui to bring you Girl Geek Dinners at Nethui! The awesome Internet NZ have sponsored this event and our GGD Nethui event will be held at the Town Hall (Civic Suite) Monday July 8th at 6pm . You do not have to attend Nethui to attend our Girl Geek Dinners event.

This event will be a little different, there will be no sit down dinner. The ticket will include a free drink and lots of finger food instead. There will be a cash bar for further drinks if required. We have some great speakers lined up and we’ll release details closer to the event.

We have 100 tickets available and 20 of these tickets are available for students. Ticket prices are $20 or student ticket prices are $5. We employ an honesty system for student tickets. Please reserve them for students. If you’re a student please use the promotional code ‘g33kgirl_student’ when purchasing a ticket.

Nethui are also helping us with the registration and ticket details. You can register here. (http://nethui.eventbrite.co.nz/#)

Sold out!

If you didn’t get your ticket yet, I’m afraid we’re now sold out. Keep an eye on the site as hopefully we’ll be back with some more dinners in the not-too-distant future!

If you’ve got your ticket already, well done! Remember, we kick off at 6:30pm this Friday in The Guest Room at The Southern Cross . See you then!

Speakers for GGD this Friday

We have two fantastic speakers lined up for this Friday:

Liz Henry, who is Kiwicon’s keynote speaker, is flying over from San Fransisco for the ‘con. Liz sports purple hair just to confuse evolutionary psychologists, tries to cause very specific trouble, and looks just swell in a tuxedo. She’s been writing on the internet since 1990, which is longer than some of you have been able to dress yourselves. Somehow, she still has hope for humanity. http://bookmaniac.org/

Our second speaker, Laura Bell, is also speaking at Kiwicon AND running the Surviving Kiwicon 101 briefing at 5pm on Friday at Little Beer Quarter which we’d definitely recommend. “A shy and retiring wall flower…” is one of the many phrases that have never been used to describe Laura. Since moving to NZ in 2011, she founded and runs in2securITy as well as working as a security consultant for Lateral Security. She knows what free time and hobbies are, she read about them in a book somewhere. It had a lot of pictures. http://www.in2security.org.nz/

Remember, we kick off at 6:30pm in The Guest Room at The Southern Cross

See you all on Friday!
